The last day of the European Championships ended with a heart-pounding challenge during the women's Madison. Elisa Balsamo and Vittoria Guazzini - both part of the Sidi family - were the protagonists of an exciting comeback, winning the final sprint and beating Russia and Great Britain after a crescendo in the second half of the race.
The sprint, masterfully launched by Guazzini in favor of Balsamo, delivers Sidi the third Track European Championships gold medal. Sidi's medal box proudly rounds off with 3 golds, 3 silvers, 1 bronze and 2 Italian records.
"It was a very tough race," Elisa Balsamo said after the race. “We knew we had to go full gas until the end because the gap was very small. I would never have imagined such an ending. "
"We cried with joy," Vittoria Guazzini continued. “Wearing this jersey means a lot to us, and it was an incredible race. At first I didn't believe it, then I looked at the scoreboard and told myself that we actually could make it. It has been a really difficult year for everyone, but the efforts have paid off. This is a great way to end our season. "
